"Anything can make us look, only art can make us see," said poet
Archibald MacLeish. To see a wide variety of extraordinary
artworks, this tour visits galleries displaying established artists as
well as those building a reputation for innovative approaches.
An essential stop is the Delaware Art Museum, known for its
outstanding collection of Pre Raphaelite art, the John Sloan
galleries (American Ashcan school), a clever sculpture garden and a
large, colorful Dale Chihuly glasswork that greets you at the
entrance.
For Andrew Wyeth aficionados, our tour visits the Brandywine
River Museum, close by Wyeth's house and workshop. The
Museum not only houses an impressive collection of his works, but
also displays that of other family members. Andrew's son, Jaime,
and his father, N.C., are well represented here.
From this glimpse of the great art of the past, we flash forward to
today's arts and artists. At the Delaware Center for the
Contemporary Arts, we look (and see) art through the eyes of
those who push the envelope and try their hands at off-the-palette
forms and mediums.
Award winning, nationally renowned sculptor Charles Parks, from
the Brandywine River school, has had a studio right on the
Brandywine for decades. Famous for both his human and animal
studies, he also has done busts of famous people such as
President George H. W. Bush. At the studio, we learn the methods
for designing and producing these great sculptures.
